Getting started

Beginner vs intermediate sewing patterns: what's the difference?

Beginner patterns have fewer closures and fitting details. Of our 245 beginner patterns, 10% mention a zip and 3% darts, against 19% and 10% of our 302 intermediate ones, and half as many have a collar. If you can sew a straight seam, gather fabric and insert elastic, start with Beginner.

What the two levels contain

We read the descriptions of all 554 patterns and counted how often each technique appears at each level.

Which level should I start with?

  • Beginner if you have sewn little or nothing: straight seams, elastic waists, gathers and simple necklines.
  • Intermediate once you are comfortable with those: zips, collars, buttonholes, darts and linings.
  • Each pattern page shows its level at the top, and each sewing guide walks through every step with illustrations.

Techniques to learn on the way up

Step by step, with video: darts, buttons and buttonholes, interfacing for collars, linings and set-in sleeves.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a sewing pattern beginner-friendly?

Few pieces, no or simple closures (elastic, ties), no fitting details such as darts, and a forgiving fit.

Can a beginner sew an intermediate pattern?

Yes, with patience: pick one with a single new technique, practise it on scraps first and follow the illustrated guide step by step.

How do I know a pattern's level?

It is shown at the top of every pattern page, next to the size range.
