How to Gather Fabric - Sewing Tutorials

There are several ways to gather fabric, each suited to different fabrics and sewing styles. Here are three popular methods:

This is the most common and efficient method for gathering fabric.

Set your sewing machine to the longest stitch length (usually 4-5mm).
Sew two parallel lines of basting stitches within the seam allowance, leaving long thread tails.
Hold the bobbin threads and gently pull to create gathers.
Distribute the gathers evenly before securing them with a regular stitch.

Tip: Sewing two rows of basting stitches (instead of one) provides more control and prevents uneven gathers.

For a more controlled gathering technique, use a zigzag stitch over a thin cord, dental floss, or thick thread.

Place the cord inside the seam allowance and zigzag over it, ensuring the needle does not pierce the cord.
Pull the cord to gather the fabric, then secure it in place before stitching.

Tip: This method works well for heavy fabrics where standard basting stitches might break.

A serger can quickly gather fabric by adjusting the differential feed and stitch length.

Increase the differential feed to create automatic gathers while serging.
Alternatively, serge over a cord and pull to gather, similar to the zigzag method.

Tip: Practice on fabric scraps to find the perfect tension and stitch settings.

The type of fabric affects how well it gathers:

Lightweight fabrics (cotton voile, chiffon, organza) gather beautifully and create delicate ruffles.
